Balkan Neighbors

Balkan Neighbors was a project for monitoring printed media that was carried out in 7 Balkan countries: Macedonia, Yugoslavia, Albania, Greece, Bulgaria, Romania and Turkey in the period 1997-1999. The project in these countries was implemented by non - governmental organizations. In our country it was implemented by our NGO, Center for Civic Initiative.

The aim of the project was monitoring of all daily, weekly and monthly newspapers and magazines in all countries, with a special accent to the texts referring to states involved in the project “Balkan Neighbors”. One of the main aims of the Balkan Neighbors project was to discover the impact of the neighbor’s picture in the media on the situation in the region, to discover the Balkan way of thinking and the perspectives of the Balkan people. Another aim of the project was to promote the fragile tendencies of the good-neighboring relations and understanding in the region throughout joint efforts of the civil society, the NGOs and people without prejudices. These tendencies are counter-balance, correction in which many people believed in spite of the highly unfriendly, historical, political and media environment.

The project was funded by FOSI - USA and coordinated by Access from Sofia - Bulgaria.
