Center for Civic Initiative together with Common Values – Skopje, realized this project on the territory of Southwest Macedonia (Municipalities of: Prilep, Krivogashtani and Krushevo) and Skopje (Municipalities of: Gazi Baba, Chair, Butel)
The realization of the project contributed towards the increase in the respect of the human rights through more efficient work of the non governmental organizations oriented on Human Rights and the Commissions for equal opportunities/Gender Equality.
The project as results brought created and approved programs for work of the Commissions for equal opportunities in the Municipalities of Prilep, Krushevo, Krivogashtani, Butel, Chair and Gazi Baba; Improved cooperation between the Commissions, Mayors and the Councils; increased capacities of the members of the Commissions for local and international legislation for human rights protection. They have also passed the Training of Trainers for human rights, having a practical exercise afterwards. As a tool for the members of the Commissions, and for the other members of the municipalities, Manual and flyer for protection of the human rights and the vulnerable groups were created.
The awareness rising on the importance for the inclusion of the vulnerable groups in the creation of the local policy was conducted through distribution of information flyers and organization of public debates. The proactive work of the commissions and the nongovernmental organizations was carried out through analysis of the needs and the problems in the communities. Namely, in the 6 selected municipalities SWOT Analysis were made; afterwards checklists were made up with recommendations for the municipalities, which were accepted by the municipalities and put in practice.
The six commissions, apart from the individual recommendations that were presented to the councils and the mayors, had a list of common requests like equal representation of the women in the organs and bodies of the local self governments, in the election bodies, equal access in the education process and equal valorisation of the effort of men and women.
The project goal was inclusion of the vulnerable groups in the creation of the local policies and creation of mechanisms for protection. The project through the activities has built the capacities of the Commissions for equal opportunities/gender equality in the frames of the Units of the Local Self-government, and also strengthened the capacities of the nongovernmental organizations that are working in the field of human rights in this region.
The project was being realized in the period 05.10.2007 – 05.08.2008, and financed by the European commission (European Initiative for Democracy and Human Rights).
