With the beginning of the tragic events on Kosovo in 1999 and the big wave of Kosovo refugees in Macedonia, CCI worked in that field too.
The Kosovo refugees were located in refugee camps and in families in several towns of Macedonia at the border between Kosovo and Albania. Their tragedy caused a lot of negative effects both individually and collectively endangering their social and civilization values with tendency of continuous asocialization and separation of the time the others were living in. The most endangered categories were the children who were mostly affected by the consequences, since their child life had not prepared them for living outside their homes, in stressful and traumatic conditions.
Most of the refugees located in the towns were in Tetovo, approximately 20 000 of them. Special staff from CCI began with the implementation of the prepared program with 1 500 Kosovo refugee children in the school “Bratstvo” located in the center of Tetovo. The program was conducted each day in two shifts by using methods and literature previously applied and adapted by ACHR.
We find the project successful because according to the evaluation methods of the work and activities, 54% of the children were estimated to be ready for our educational system and over 70% who overcame traumatic conditions.
The literature used as guide in the conduct of the project was a compilation of texts made in co-operation with ACHR.
The project lasted from April - July 1999 and was funded by the Dutch foundation CARITAS.
